SOMERSET HOUSE

This nine bedroom eight bathroom home was renovated for a private client. The estate, known as Newton Surmaville, is a centuries-old English Manor situated on 62 acres of property in rural Somerset, England. Newton Surmaville is notable for its Jacobean architectural style and was built between 1608 and 1612. The client, a young American family from California will spend summers in Somerset entertaining family and friends in the picturesque countryside. The home required a full renovation to reinvigorate the estate with practicality and comfort in mind for the young family.

The integrity of original architectural materials were carefully considered by restoring windows, slate roofs and floors, plaster finishes and existing wall paneling. We collaborated with local craftspeople to restore and re-hang centuries-old tapestries which were made specifically for the manor’s grand rooms. Custom rush matting, a medieval flooring material, was hand crafted by local artisans.
